At a young age, she grew up in New Orleans with just her mother, Amanda Jane Moore. She didn't know much about her father but she knew a small number of things due to her father writing her letters and from what the grocery store clerk, Mr. Charles told her. She grew up around a saloon due to her mother having a position as a saloon girl there, she knew most of the people who came into the saloon and enjoyed meeting new people even though she was very shy.

Michelle had a horse that she got as a 14-year-old birthday gift from the saloon owner, Ms. Thomas. Her horse was named Beauty and she loved to take her out to the outskirts of New Orleans to let her run, she was always at the stable taking care of Beauty whenever she wasn't at the saloon or the grocery store. Michelle's mother was murdered by a robber on November 16, 1899, in New Orleans when she was out checking her telegrams and letters after they tried to take her purse.

After the loss of her mother, Michelle wrote a letter to her father that she was coming to New Alexandria. She arrived in New Alexandria on November 18, 1899, where she met her father in Saint Denis. This is where her story continued to grow the longer she lived in New Alexandria and the more stuff she learned.
